Prompts are always a handy thing to have. Whether you are looking to challenge yourself to write about new topics, or just start a project, a prompt can be the key to a strong beginning.
Here are 11 prompts we have written to get you started on your next writing project!
Looking to write something fun? Here are a few prompts to help you with your fiction writing!
As the sun beats down upon your head, you once again wipe the sweat from your brow. You’ve forgotten how many days it has been, but the road is beginning to become wearisome. You check your pack again to take inventory, as if looking again would change the situation. You sigh as you shut it again. Rations for maybe one more day. You’re not really sure what to do or where to go, but you’ll have to figure out something soon…
Once again, the night is silent. Too silent. You look out your window, almost too petrified to breathe, let alone move. You’re sure that they’re still out there. But where…you aren’t exactly certain. Again, you hear the noise…Your fear overrides your greater reason as your hands dart to your ears to cover them. You wish this could all be over, but little did you know, it was about to become much, much worse…
Maybe you want something with a little less gravity-
The first day of summer. Really nothing like it. As you wake up, you take your time stretching, letting go of the worry of unfinished homework or overdue assignments; none of that today. No, today was yours, and yours alone. Finally awake, you excitedly pull on a T-shirt as you begin to get ready. Mind racing, you’re not sure exactly what you want to do today, but you’re sure to figure something out…
You sighed disappointedly as you finished counting. 14. Three more than last night. As you roll down your sleeve, you decide to stop counting. Any more than 14 mosquito bites, and you would go crazy. At least camp wasn’t all bad; after all, there was the time James fell into the lake. Just thinking about it makes you smile. That reminds you…didn’t James’ dad say that he had a surprise for you all? Rushing to sit up, you begin hurriedly getting ready. If James’ dad had a surprise, you are sure it is not one you want to miss out on!
And if you’re looking to write something in the best genre-
Sheathing your sword, you look over the precipice. The camp appears to be still. You sigh in relief. The main camp hadn’t heard the squeals of the goblin scouts that you had just dispatched. It wasn’t going to be long until they noticed them missing, however. You look back at the rest of your crew as you try to formulate a plan…
Maybe you’re less of a fantasy writer, but more interested in historical fiction. Here are a few just for you!
You couldn’t believe your eyes; they’d really done it. As you looked out across the English Channel, there were too many ships to count, laden with Norman warriors. You could hear their chanting as they assisted the sails with their oars. You needed to save your family, and you needed to alert the men of the village. The King was many miles away, and it would be days before he could save you. Whatever you needed to do, you needed to do it now…
It was supposed to be a beautiful day. Nana was celebrating her 87th birthday, Opa and Oma were taking the family out to the country for a picnic, and father had even been able to take leave from work. Everything was splendid until…they showed up. The town grew silent as the parade of goose-stepping soldiers made their way to the center of town. What they wanted now was impossible to say…
Or instead of history, how about the future?
You try to take deep, calm breaths as you steady your thinking. This is the very first time any civilization has ever made contact with an extraterrestrial, and as the foremost senator of the global council, you were elected to be earth’s representative. A very tentative truce was made, as neither side fully trusted the other. It is now your job to secure that peace…or terminate it, if necessary. Everything is riding on you now…
The entire ship began rumbling violently as alarms blared everywhere. “We’re taking critical damage, captain!” one of the technicians manning the bridge barks at you. “Deferring charge to the left battery shields, captain.” Another declares. You grit your teeth. Captaining the head ship in the charge meant that you were going to take a lot of flak…it also meant that, if you failed, the charge, and perhaps the entire campaign, was going to fail. Your country couldn’t afford that…
Or maybe you just want something entirely random, to challenge yourself. Here are some minimalists prompts just for that!
It wasn’t going to be possible. You sit back in your chair, defeated. You aren’t sure if the perspiration on your brow is from effort or concentration, but either way, you are sure the task is impossible. Yet, there is still something inside of you trying to tell you to try again…or maybe that’ just recklessness. You really have no idea. What to do next?...
You stand, stunned. How could such a thing be said? Where would anyone have gotten the idea? You try to shake yourself from the stupor. It’s nearly impossible, but you’ve done it. Now, what could be done about this? You begin wracking your brain for ideas…
